Thought Editing: " Fear Keeps Us Alive; Never Stop Being Afraid"

"Fear keeps us alive. Never stop being afraid."
"That's not living; that's just not dying!" - The Croods

This post is an introductory illustration for my new series called "Thought Editing." In this exciting series, get ready to delve into the fascinating links between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We will explore how our "Automatic Negative Thoughts" (ANTs) can keep us stuck in fear and anxiety, and most importantly, we will learn some methods to get rid of ANTs.

The fear response is how our brain keeps us safe in real danger. However, experiencing intense fear responses when there is no threat of danger can be unhealthy, hindering our ability to reach our goals. The Croods is an animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation. It tells the story of a prehistoric family that spends most of their time inside a dark and cold cave. Apart from going out to search for food, they seldom venture out. The father, Grug (the voice of Nicolas Cage), has a motto for his family: "Fear keeps us alive. Never stop being afraid." He believes that their fear has helped them survive while their neighbors perished. Grug's entire parenting style is based on fear, and he is controlled by it.

Following an earthquake that destroys their cave, Grug, the patriarch of the Croods family, learns that change is inevitable, even if we do not want it to happen. Despite his best efforts to prevent change and maintain the "status quo," the Croods have no other option but to leave their home and find a new place to live. Grug's resistance to change puts his family's lives in danger, prompting his daughter Eep to call him out on his philosophy of remaining fearful and not trying new things. She boldly declares, "That's not living; that's just not dying!" Eventually, Grug realized that he and his family could only survive by adopting and adapting to change.
